Translator’s Note
Sourav Roy’s work braids emotion and imagery in such a way that the reader is left feeling both comfort and surprise. The emotions speak to everyday experiences but combined with atypical imagery, they often open unexpected doors leading to possibilities that may not have been self-evident at the outset. The challenge of translating Roy’s work also lies in this dynamic—to transfer into another language the play involved in the poem with a lightness of touch.
The feelings of love and care in their various iterations suffuse this current set of poems. What does it mean to bring new life into this world? Where is home? Who has one? and various other questions are ruminated on, questions which, though large, enter our lives in small ways and leave an imprint.
